Starbucks in India January 7, 2007

Starbucks is getting ready to enter the Indian market. It will be interesting to see how they compete with the Coffee Day and Barista chains. But I think they will find their own niche.
Back when Cafe Coffee Day started, I used to wonder who would pay 25 Rupees for a cup of coffee when you can buy the same coffee (without the fancy names) for 5 Rupees. Boy was I wrong. These places are doing roaring business. I guess the “young and active” market (of college kids) prefer to do their coffee and socializing at these fancy outlets.
One of my favorite stand-up comedians Jackie Mason, has this to say about Starbucks (holds good for the other fancy coffee places as well).
One more competitor for our current Maharashtra governor’s Jamaayi. Such shops hardly impress me, the flavours are not that great, … keraLa dalli kodo glass vessel na Tea.. ha ha.. sakkataagiratte
I think it is more a place where young people like to “hang-out” than the coffee. For people like me in Ahmedabad, where there are no bars and such, Barista or CCD where the cool hang out spots for some nice relaxing time with friends and a good menu to boot.
